Learn Airspace
Documentation · v1.1.6
Learn Airspace is a study tool for pilots learning FAA airspace classification and VFR weather minimums. It covers all six airspace classes (A–G), the VFR minimums triangle, and 20 scenario-based practice questions.
Everything runs in your browser — no account or internet connection needed after your first visit. Your progress is saved automatically on your device.
Navigation
Three sections are accessible from the tab bar at the bottom of the screen:
- Explore — Interactive airspace diagram. Tap any zone to learn about it.
- Scenarios — Real-world flight situations with multiple-choice questions.
- Practice — VFR minimums triangle with three practice modes.
The ⌂ home button returns you to Explore from anywhere. The ⚙ gear button opens Settings.
Offline & Install
After your first visit, the app works with no internet connection. To install it on your home screen, use Add to Home Screen (iOS/Android) or Install (Chrome/Edge) from your browser menu.
Explore — Airspace Diagram
The Explore tab shows an interactive vertical cross-section of US airspace. Each colored layer represents an airspace class at its real-world altitude. Tap any zone to open its Info Panel.
Scenes
Five scenes are available from the chips at the top of the diagram, each showing a different airspace environment:
- B — Major hub airport (Class B "wedding cake" structure)
- C — Regional airport with a two-ring Class C
- D — Smaller towered airport with Class D
- EG — Rural cross-country flight through Class E and G
- A — High-altitude IFR-only Class A airspace
Info Panel
Tap any zone to open its Info Panel, which covers entry requirements, equipment, weather minimums, and a Why does this rule exist? explanation. On mobile the panel slides up from the bottom; on desktop it opens on the right side. Tap outside the panel or press ✕ to close it.
Day / Night Toggle
The ☀ DAY / ☽ NIGHT button switches the diagram's sky background. Night mode highlights the different VFR minimums that apply in Class G at night. Your preferred default can be set in Settings.
Scenarios
The Scenarios tab has 20 real-world VFR flight situations across five difficulty tiers. Each scenario asks 2–3 multiple-choice questions about airspace, weather minimums, or entry requirements. Every answer — right or wrong — includes a full explanation.
Tiers
- Tier 1 — Foundation (8 scenarios): Basic airspace identification and standard minimums.
- Tier 2 — Class E & G Deep Dive (5 scenarios): Night vs. day minimums, altitude variations, and tower-closure transitions.
- Tier 3 — Edge Cases (4 scenarios): Special VFR, student pilot Class B rules, and other exceptions.
- Tier 4 — Special Use (2 scenarios): MOAs and Restricted Areas.
- Tier 5 — Integrated (1 scenario): A cross-country flight through multiple airspace classes.
Filter by tier using the chips at the top of the list, or tap ALL to see everything.
Progress & Streaks
A scenario is marked complete (✓) once you've answered all its questions. Correct answers build your streak. Your current streak, best streak, and overall progress count are shown in the scenario list header. Progress is saved automatically — no account needed.
Practice — Learn Mode
All seven zones of the VFR minimums triangle are visible with their values shown. Tap any zone to see a detailed explanation of why those minimums exist. Use this to study before testing yourself.
Practice — Fill Mode
All zone values are hidden. Tap a zone to answer a multiple-choice question about its minimums. Correct answers appear in green; wrong answers show in red with the right value revealed. Your running score is shown above the triangle. Tap RESET to start over.
Practice — Speed Mode
A timer starts when you tap the first zone. Answer all seven zones as quickly and accurately as you can. Your time is recorded when the last zone is answered, and your best time is saved across sessions. This mode is good for exam prep — the goal is instant recall without hesitation.
Preferences
Open Settings with the ⚙ gear button. Options:
- Default Day/Night — Whether the Explore diagram opens in day or night mode.
- Haptic Feedback — Vibration on answer selection (Android only).
Resetting Progress
Tap Reset All Progress in Settings to clear all scenario completions, streaks, and practice scores. This cannot be undone. Your preferences are not affected.
